Sad performances of N82 as access point.

I'm a owner of a iPod Touch and a Nokia N82 smartphone. I feel compelled to write this post as you might be tempted to think how well the two interact... The results are'nt that good.

After some like 3 months of using wireless internet access my dissatisfaction was total. Speed was never exiting ranging from 0kbps to 50kpbs. Today as major UMTS providers are pushing internet adapters as crazy it was at least a turnoff to see such performace.

Web sharing throught joikuspot Light

I used the Joikuspot light application to visit the internet using my N82 connection. Basically it turns the phone into a access point. The light version namely allows you to roam the web... namely. In fact it looks to me like it's acting as a proxy with the nokia browser (a gecko based one). This brings massive incompatibility with the Apple's Safari browser wich otherwise can enjoy some optimization while visiting the net. The result is that sites and applications don't work, forget facebook, gmail and every single iPod application.

I then downloaded joikuspot premium to see improvements in speed and compatability with applications. The result is that while speed didn't improve at all I had limited connectivity for the applications.

Now let's see the problem here: wireless performance. It looks like the internal antennas have some problem living togheter. For testing I used several connections methods to my Macbook and my iPod touch, then comparing the results with speedtest.net I come to these conclusions

• Wired UMTS connection: Good
• Bluetooth UMTS sharing: Poor
• WiFi UMTS Sharing throught Joikuspot: Very Poor to none.

To share a wired connection over WiFi from the macbook is not difficult. You just need to go into preferences -> sharing -> internet sharing -> Share from wired to airport. The same can be done to share from a Windows Machine but that's a pointless effort to me.

Here I throw some graph from my testing to show the futility of buying into a joikuspot software or using bluetooth for internet connections with a N82.

Conclusions

If' you're looking for wireless internet access from your N82 expect poor performance. In addition to it I've found that the joikuspot professional applications is useless and the joikuspot lite is unusable for iPod touch access. When travelling you're advised to carry the cable alongside your phone.

Puo capitare che dobbiate scrivere delle password od anche i dei PIN per le carte di credito. Nel caso del PIN l'idea più idiota è chiaramente di scriverlo sulla carta di credito ma quale è il posto più sicuro? Dopo la nostra memoria permettetemi di suggerire come posto sicuro il cellulare Nokia. Mi ricordo con nostalgia l'applicativo Nokia "Pagamenti" del mio ex 6630. Questa applicazione permetteva di memorizzare in maniera sicura dati di carte di credito, password e nomi utente. Purtroppo Nokia non la inserisce più nei suoi telefoni.

Quindi bisogna ricorrere alle alternative commerciali. Io ho provato il programma Handy Safe. Handy Safe è una specie di blocco note sicuro. All'installazione vi chiede una password numerica, dopodiche tutto quello che memorizzate al suo interno viene criptato con il protocollo Blowfish a 448 bit (praticamente indecifrabile). In pratica con una password potete mettere al sicuro i dati sensibili che magari sono di difficile memorizzazione. Ad esempio mentre stavo in viaggio ho perso la carta interbancaria e ho dovuto prelevare con la carta di credito della quale non ho mai memorizzato il codice - Handy safe mi ha salvato :)

Il programma funziona in maniera eccellente. C'è un client per PC che non ho mai usato e penso di non dover usare mai. Il suo difetto principale: costa 44 dollari, eccessivo...

Nokia N82 ed N95 - Geotagging delle foto

Le 2 ultime versioni del Firmware Nokia per questi N82 e N95 permettono di fare il Geotagging delle foto. Sicuramente la caratteristica sarà estesa a tutti i modelli Symbian dotati di GPS integrato.

Il file di una foto .jpg è composto da un Header (intestazione) e da un corpo dati. Nella intestazione c'è un segmento di dati detti EXIF (Exchangeable image file format). In pratica questo segmento dati contiene le informazioni sulla fotografia. Uno dei dati che puo essere incluso nel segmento EXIF è la posizione geografica al momento dello scatto, il nostro cellulare la mette automaticamente.

Per attivare questa funzione andate su opzioni/impostazioni/regista posizione (attivate) - Da questo punto in poi vedrete un piccolo disco satellite nell'angolo in basso a sinistra che simboleggia la ricezione della posizione. Se siete al coperto il cellulare registra sulla foto l'ultima posizione nota negli ultimi 10 minuti altrimenti nessuna posizione sarà aggiunta alla foto.


Cosa si fa con le foto Geotaggate?

1. Si possono scaricare su Flickr come queste qui
2. Si possono scaricare su Panoramio
3. Si possono scaricare su Picasa Web

In questi casi le foto verranno posizionate sulla mappa in maniera precisa e sia voi che i vostri amici sapranno dove sono state prese. Con il servizio Flickr se volete che le foto siano automaticamente messe sul posto giusto della mappa andate a questa pagina.

In caso le vogliate tenere solamente sul PC il modo più facile è usare Picasa+Google Earth

Si consiglia di accendere la camera un minuto prima di fare la foto anche se sui cellulari con A-GPS puo volerci molto meno per un fix della posizione.

E' arrivato Skype mobile... ed è una vaccata.

Oggi ho scoperto che Skype ha una versione beta del suo programma per i telefoni Symbian.

Per scaricare e provare anche voi andate su mobiledownload.skype.com. Scaricarla è gratis (Al netto dei costi del vostro operatore se usate il GPRS/3G). La ho provata sul mio E65. La gioia iniziale è stata immediatamente smorzata dalle condizioni di uso e subito dopo si è trasformata nella cosidetta "rabbia del giusto". Leggete le condizioni di uso (nascoste nel menù "help") e comparatele con la "Promessa di skype"

Ecco le condizioni di uso di Skype Mobile Beta:

1. TI CHIEDE IL NUMERO MOBILE. Perché? (C'è IL PACCO!)
2. Ricevere chiamate si PAGA!!! E SI PAGA CON IL PROPRIO CREDITO SKYPE! in più dovremmo pagare i costi dati del nostro operatore se non ci connettiamo con il WiFi.
3. Chiamare i contatti Skype SI PAGA!!!! Tutte le chiamate sono tariffate come "MOBILE" ovvero con la tariffa cellulare ovvero QUELLA PIU' CARA. Ed in aggiunta a cio il client fa una chiamata locale per la connessione e si paga per i dati trasferiti.
   
4. Per ogni chiamata skype l'applicazione effettua UNA CHIAMATA LOCALE! ed è chiaramente scritto che queste chiamate locali sono a pagamento!!! ("the application will make local calls to access skype")
5. Per ricevere chiamate dovete avere CREDITO SKYPE.
   

I costi sono spiegati in questa pagina. Si paga per chiamare i contatti (Chiamata celluare), per ricevere le chiamate dai contatti (Chiamata skypeout), per chiamare fissi e mobili (in questo caso si paga doppio sia quella cellulare che quella skypeout!). In più si paga anche il roaming dati.

Ed ecco che bisogna porsi una domanda fondamentale: Ma che ho scaricato a fare Skype se non per telefonare gratis???

Spiegazione: Questo finto client è una vaccata, la promessa di chiamate gratis da computer a computer è stata tradita. Le chiamate non sono fatte dal software (è scritto in java e quindi ha capacità multimediali molto limitate): Quello che fa questo FINTO CLIENT è dire alla centrale di skype di connettervi con una chiamata skypeout con i vostri contatti. In pratica è come una pubblicità ingannevole, perché voi pensate di avere skype (grafica e contatti) e giustamente ipotizzate di potere fare chiamate gratis mentre invece avete solamente scaricato un applicativo per la chat che vi facilita la terminazione del credito. Vabbe dai chiamiamolo pure un Dialer tanto praticamente siamo li.

Soluzioni:

• Fatevi un favore e controllate le mie guide su come mettere eutelia e fring sul telefonino Nokia (o windows mobile) e questi di skype lasciateli stare, fino a quando non avranno le palle di scrivere un vero client in symbian...
• Se disponete di un computer (portatile?) considerate la possibilità di istallare il vero client su quello e usare la connessione del telefonino per connettersi a internet.
• Fatevi chiamare sul cellulare e non spenderete niente.
  

Nokia battery replacement arrived.

Today I received my battery replacement. As noone knows Nokia is offering free replacement batteries for the ones that bought one from a defective bach from matsushita. Those defective batteries were produced in china with second choice materials (Possibly altered without nokia knowing) and had in some cases the tendence to overheat or even ignite.

Now a LIPO Fire is never a good thing. Lithium Polymers are unstable and can start a self-sustaining chemical fire that neither water or sand can extinguish. Even worse those batteries have the habit of exploding.

Here is a video for your information. The first battery is a cheap and fake chinese, the second in a "compatible one" and the third costing several orders of magnitude more is a original Nokia, you watch the video then decide what you want in your jeans pocket:

I'd liked it more if the instructions were printed on recycled paper instead than a sheet of plastic.

MOO minicards are arrived!!!!

And they are crap.

By getting a PRO account on flickr you are eligible to get a 10 free MOO minicards as a gift. I did. It didn't work in the first place but then they fixed a bug and I was later able to place a order for these cards. You can configure how you want your picture to be framed and additional data to be placed n the card but in the end the real problem is that these cards are not good.

Results are disappointing. I uploaded good resolution pictures and the cards are printed with a thypographical looking process. I am still undecided if there is a moiree but the contrast and resolution seems to be dimmed in comparison to the originals. Also the cards are really mini and I don't see any actual usefullness. The cardboard is strong and the packaging is great but still... if I am ever going to order prints from MOO it's sure it won't be another bach of minicards.
